Hot topic: The Architecture of Hospitals

13-15 April 2005 Venue: University Medical Centre Groningen, The Netherlands

Between 13-15 April 2005, at University Medical Centre Groningen, The Netherlands, 100 top scientists will discuss concepts and advances in designs for healthcare institutions
Hospitals stand out through their scale, the large number of people treated and nursed, impressive staffing levels, and the coming and going of visitors. Hospital locations vary considerably:

Sometimes on a city’s outskirts, sometimes in its heart. Some (particularly academic) are so large that they resemble complete villages, with shops, services, information centres and restaurants.
On arrival, patients become part of a complex logistical process, and today they consume healthcare services just as modern consumers do: discerningly and consciously. This places high demands on today’s healthcare institutions and creates an enormous challenge for management and staff - which becomes particularly apparent during construction and renovation of new and old healthcare institutions.

In collaboration with a highly qualified team of designers and advisers, an optimal environment can be created for patients, staff and visitors. The care centre of the future is shaped within strict rules, designed to guarantee health and safety, and within rigid budgets.

During the last 20 years, expertise in such construction/renovation has expanded dramatically, with impressive advances both on psychosocial and technical planes. Combined with the practical experiences of the medical and management teams, as well as patients, a solid foundation has been laid for architects and the construction industry to make giant strides forward - together.

At The Architecture of Hospitals conference over 100 international scientists, architects, hospital administrators and technical specialists, will present their latest research findings and practical experiences. Thus the event will enable visitors to gain invaluable information, and make contact with the world’s leading experts in this field.
