Lung Flute – new device to obtain high quality sputum samples
At MEDICA 2007, Medical Acoustics presented the Lung Flute®, a cost effective and easy-to-use device to quickly and effectively gather sputum samples. The Lung Flute has FDA-clearance and was recently successfully registered as a Class 1 medical device for sale in the European Union and qualified for the application of the CE mark for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
"The Lung Flute provides EU clinicians with a safe, easy-to-use means of obtaining high quality sputum samples for the improved diagnosis and treatment of a myriad of lung and respiratory diseases," explains Terence Cryan, President of Medical Acoustics.
The Lung Flute is Medical Acoustics’ first product and shaped like a flute that creates a specific low-frequency sound when the user blows into it. The hand-held, disposable device creates vibrations in the lung which cause secretions to thin and be expelled. The device is very comfortable for the patient and could greatly enhance testing significantly as the procedure can be repeated every 20 minutes.
"The applications for our device are far-ranging. They include, for example, public health officials using the Lung Flute® to quickly and effectively gather sputum samples to screen for tuberculosis (TB), or even health clinics using it to clear the lungs of asthma patients. Our novel technology is now accessible to over 300 million people throughout the European Union," concludes Cryan.
