World Heart Day 2007 - Healthy families, healthy communities
“Team Up for Healthy Hearts” was the motto of this year’s World Heart Day on September 30th, 2007. The German Society of Cardiologists in Private Practice (BNK) made very sensible suggestions how to improve the state of health and how to lower risk factors for cardiac infarction or stroke.
More physical activity
Physical activity strengthens the cardiocvascular system. The BNK recommends 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity on at least 4-5 days a week. Motivate friends and family: Walking, running or cycling – an active lifestyle lowers the risk of developing chronic diseases. Activities could also be integrated in daily routine, e.g. by climbing stairs instead of taking the lift.
Balanced dietAdults and children also need to establish balanced diets. Mediterranean diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, fish, poultry, salad and olive oil is an ideal solution.
The body mass index should be below 25. A normal weight decreases the risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis and even cancer.
Check blood pressure
Once the arterial pressure rises above 115/75 mmHg, the risk of cardiovascular disease begins to increase. Home monitoring of blood pressure is essential for the prevention of stroke or cardiac infarction and measurend values should not exceed 140/90 mmHG. In the case of high blood pressure a general patitioner sould be consulted.
Quit smoking
Smoking accelerated the ageing process. A study by British scientists compared the state of health between smokers and non-smokers. The collected data revealed that smoking shortens the lifetime by approximately 15 years, each cigarette costing 28 minutes of lifetime. General practitioneers and self-help organizations offer help to quit smoking. Passive smoking is equally harmful, so smoking bans in workplaces and indoor places, including restaurants and bars, is a key issue for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. This article was published on 10/02/2007
